In October 2012 the Tautenburg Observatory (Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg) had their traditional Long Night of Stars (Lange Nacht der Sterne).
They have one of the biggest telescopes in Germany which is also the biggest Schmidt Camera in the world having a primary mirror diameter of 2 meters.
There is also a smaller automatic 30cm Schmidt Camera (TEST) which is used for extrasolar planet research. At the observatory site there is one facility for the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR).

During this night amateur astronomers from Jena (Volkssternwarte Urania Jena e.V.) brought their telescopes and showed
fascinating astronomical wonders across the sky to over 600 visitors.
